Flying Splices at a Paper Plant

Client Portrait: Story Enso Kabel

A Giant in Hagen

The Stora Enso company group, one of the world’s leading timber industry conglomerates, is represented in 40 countries on five continents. The company, which has its roots in Sweden and Finland, has about 45,000 employees in total and earns 12 billion euros in sales annually. The Kabel plant, located in the district of the same name in the city of Hagen, Germany, can look back on more than a hundred years of history.

About 1,000 employees work on three production lines (paper machines, coaters to apply coatings, and calenders to smooth the paper), producing 620,000 tons of paper every year – more than a ton every minute. This makes this plant one of Stora Enso’s highest-output production units and one of the largest paper factories in the world.

Kabel produces coated printing paper for mass market and trade magazines, catalogs, and advertising brochures, but also for textbooks and illustrated books. Along with clients in Germany, which, at 40 percent, make up the largest proportion of the plant’s clientele, Stora Enso Kabel also supplies publishers, printers, and wholesalers throughout Europe and overseas.
